Introduction to PostGIS and Geoserver

Duration: 5 Days
Prerequisites: Basic knowledge in GIS or would have completed “Introduction to Geoinformation Technology”

Course Objective

The objective of the course is to provide ample training in understanding spatial database and types, basic understanding on PostgreSQL and PostGIS Interfaces, Creating Spatial Database, Performing Simple queries, handling spatial geometry and also concentrates on, importance of spatial indexing in PostGIS. GeoServer make users to understand the importance in publishing spatial data; this includes publishing vector data and raster data.

Module I: Spatial Database basics and Introduction to PostgreSQL and PostGIS

  • Introducing Spatial Database Management System:
    • About Spatial Database;
    • Modeling Spatial Database;
    • Indexing and its importance;
    • Types of index;
    • Installing PostgreSQL/PostGIS.
  • PostGIS Geography Types:
    • Point;
    • Line string;
    • Polygon;
    • Multipoint;
    • Multi polygon;
    • Geometry Collection.
  • PostGIS:
    • Introduction to PostGIS;
    • PostGIS in managing Spatial Data;
    • Understanding pgAdmin.

Module II: Working with Spatial Data, Data retrieval, Indexing and Database Administration

  • Working with PostGIS:
    • Creating a spatial database;
    • Loading spatial data in to the database.
  • Data retrieval:
    • Understanding simple and spatial queries;
    • Retrieval of spatial data.
  • PostgreSQL Administration:
    • Server configuration;
    • Managing Databases;
    • Monitoring Database.

Module III: Introduction to GeoServer and its Functionalities

  • Geoserver Basics:
    • Introduction to geoserver;
    • Uses;
    • Prominence of geoserver and prerequisites for GeoServer – Installing JRE;
    • Creating Data Directory;
    • Setting Data Directory;
    • Installation of GeoServer.
  • Working with GeoServer I:
    • Overview of Web Administration Interface;
    • Supported Data formats in GeoServer;
    • Prominence of geoserver and prerequisites for GeoServer – Installing JRE;
    • Workspaces and its prominence;
    • Creating Workspaces, Stores, and Managing Layers.

Module IV: Spatial Data in GeoServer and Services

  • Working With GeoServer II:
    • Publishing Spatial Data;
    • Loading Spatial Data into GeoServer;
    • Managing Layer groups;
    • Publishing Spatial Data in GeoServer (Vector and Raster).
  • About Services:
    • Introduction to Services;
    • Web Map Service;
    • Web Feature Service;
    • Web Coverage Service;
    • Virtual OWS Services.

On Completion

On completion of this course you can:

  • Understand the difference between Spatial and Non-Spatial Databases.
  • Understand how to load and manage the spatial data and perform various types of queries.
  • Understand how to load spatial data and publish it using GeoServer.
  • Learn how to manage the services in GeoServer.
