Introduction to Geoinformation Technology

Prerequisites: Any Graduates with Basic Knowledge in Computers

Course Objective

The Training programme will concentrate on developing basic understanding of Geoinformation technologies available today. The various sessions will provide a comprehensive understanding of how GIS works in an integrated manner and how they support in better decision making. The training will also provide hands on experience by working with Quantum GIS which helps in managing the Geoinformation technology.

Module I: Fundamentals of Geographic Information Technology

  • Fundamentals of Geography:
    • Shape of the Earth;
    • Datum and its types;
    • Coordinate System;
    • Projection System;
    • Map Scale;
    • Maps – Types.
  • Introduction to GIS:
    • Definition;
    • Components of GIS;
    • Functions of GIS;
    • Difference between paper maps and GIS Maps;
    • Applications of GIS.
  • Coordinate system and Projections:
    • Understanding coordinate system and its Types;
    • Datum and Projections.

Module II: GIS Data Types, Data Creation, Editing

  • GIS Data types:
    • Data Types;
    • Spatial and Non-Spatial;
    • Raster and Vector;
    • Concept of Layers.
  • Georeferencing:
    • Definition of Georeferencing;
    • Prominence of Georeferencing in GIS.
  • Vectorization/Editing:
    • Spatial data editing;
    • Editing tools and Functionalities;
    • Concept of Snapping and its importance;
    • Managing edit Sessions;
    • Managing Attribute data.
  • Data Retrieval:
    • Selection and its prominence;
    • Performing different sets of queries;
    • Types of selection.

Module III: Analysis and Map Layout

  • Spatial Analysis:
    • Introduction to Spatial Analysis;
    • Proximity Analysis;
    • Overlay Analysis;
    • Defining Buffer;
    • Union;
    • Clip, and Dissolve.
  • Map Layout:
    • Introducing Map templates;
    • Map Elements;
    • Grids and Graticules.

Module IV: Mini Project

Participants will be asked to prepare a GIS Map based on all the concepts that has been taught throughout the session.
